What IS a blog???

Why should we use a class blog for independent reading?
What IS a blog anyway?
How can I benefit from using a blog?

These are all questions that may be running through your minds as you sit in the computer lab today. First, watch the short video so we can discuss our ideas to the above questions.  Then, watch the video and take the BrainPop quiz on netiquette to help you understand your responsibilities as a net user.  Using a blog is a two way street. You will be expected to read and refer to your classmates comments, but don't worry. We will practice using our blog and by the end of the year you will be a blogging expert!

To make our class blog successful you must agree to follow these simple procedures:
1. Always have a parent or guardian's permission before you use the Internet.
2 Be polite, considerate and respectful in all your communications.
3. Only insert messages or pictures which are appropriate because this is a school blog.
4. Make sure we don't break copyright laws.
5. Never reveal any private information like a full name, address or phone number. Once you post a comment it is online for anyone to read forever.
6. Keep our password private so other people cannot use it.

How do you feel about using a blog to complete your independent reading requirement?  Remember to be mindful of following the rules of netiquette when posting your thoughts and feelings. Take a moment to read and think about your comment before publishing it for everyone to see.

Lo, Malinda. Ash. New York: Little Brown and Company, 2009. Print.

This book Ash, is about a girl named Ash who in at first looses her mother who died from suddenly becoming sick. The village people had thought maybe the fairies had taken her because of her youth and beauty. Ash is very sad and visits her mothers grave every night because she misses her mother so dearly. The greenwitch, Maire Solanya tells Ash “you must let her go,” (Lo 19). Ash does not take her advice because so far she isn't able to get over her mother's death. Her father on the other hand meets a new wife, named Lady Isobel. Lady Isobel has two daughters that become Ash's new step sisters. Ash does not like her step sisters nor her new mother, who also does not approve of Ash either. Things do not get any better either, Maire Solanya gave Ash's father a draught to calm him but it does no good for he has broken out in fever. Lady Isobel becomes very angry with Maire Solanya. They argue over the fact that this method Maire has tried has not worked. As a result Lady Isobel brings him to a physician to help Ash's father. The doctors drain his blood thinking it will help him but he only gets worse causing him to die. Ash with her new mother and two step sisters moved in to Quinn House where her new mother and sisters originally lived. Everything is quite strange to Ash and she feels very alone. Not only has she lost her mother but now her father who was the only left of her real family.
